Clean swaps
How we upgrade the restaurant version with better ingredients.
- Granulated and Brown Sugar → Organic Coconut Sugar — Eliminates highly refined sugars in favor of a minimally processed alternative with a lower glycemic index.
- Plain Flour → Stone-ground Spelt or Whole Wheat Flour — Adds essential nutrients and fiber while avoiding the bleaching agents and additives found in standard white flour.
- Standard Butter → Grass-fed Butter — Provides a superior Omega-3 to Omega-6 ratio and higher levels of Vitamin K2 compared to conventional dairy butter.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 190C (375F) and lightly grease a medium-sized baking dish.
- Peel, core, and slice the apples into chunky pieces. Place them in the baking dish.
- Mix the granulated sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice into the apples and toss to coat evenly.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, and salt.
- Add the cubed butter to the dry mixture and rub it in with your fingertips until it forms a coarse, crumbly texture.
- Spread the crumble topping evenly over the top of the apple mixture without pressing it down too firmly.
- Bake for 35-45 minutes until the fruit is bubbling and the topping is golden brown.
- Serve warm with a drizzle of custard or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
